AP Chemistry is for highly motivated students with interest in the physical and chemical sciences. AP Chemistry builds on concepts covered in a regular or "honors"-type chemistry course with greater detail in content and laboratory investigations. This course prepares the student to take the AP Chemistry examination, usually given in May. Topics in AP Chemistry include atomic theory, chemical bonding, phases of matter, solutions, types of reactions, equilibrium, reaction kinetics, and thermodynamics.

Topics Covered

The exam covers the common topics of most introductory chemistry courses, including:

The AP Chemistry examination, as stated above, is administered in the beginning of May. As with many AP exams, the Chemistry exam is divided into two major sections, the multiple choice and free response. There are 75 multiple choice questions and approximately 8 free response questions which require the student to write chemical equations, solve problems, and develop thoughtful essays to conceptual scenarios. The free response section also includes such topics as "descriptive chemistry" and "laboratory safety and methods". The multiple choice section does not allow a calculator to be used, nor does it provide any additional reference material other than a periodic table; 90 minutes are alloted to complete it. The free response section is split into two sections: Part A, which has one required question and two from which only one will be completed; and Part B, which contains three required questions and another pair to choose from. Part A allows calculators and is 40 minutes long; Part B is 50 minutes long and calculators are not allowed. The required question in Part A is always an equilibrium question related to solubility or acids and bases. The first question of Part B is always a chemical equation question in which 8 chemical scenarios are presented and the student is required to pick 5 scenarios and write an unbalanced, net ionic, chemical equation for each scenario (including specific charges if applicable). If time allows, a student may return to Part A while working on Part B, but still is not allowed a calculator. For all of Section 2, a periodic table, list of selected standard reduction potentials, and two pages of equations and conventions are available for use. AP: Chemistry (445 words)
AP Chemistry should meet the objectives of a good general chemistry course.
The college course in general chemistry differs qualitatively from the usual first secondary school course in chemistry with respect to the kind of textbook used, the topics covered, the emphasis on chemical calculations and the mathematical formulation of principles, and the kind of laboratory work done by students.
The AP Chemistry course is designed to be taken after the completion of a first course in high school chemistry.
