The presentation of the ATAC Trial* Completed Treatment Analysis at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) represents one of the most eagerly awaited data presentations in the battle against breast cancer in the last 30 years.
The ATAC trial commenced in July 1996, completing recruitment in March 2000, and is the longest running and largest early breast cancer treatment study ever undertaken, involving 9,366 patients and 381 trial centres from around the world.
The postmenopausal women taking part in the ATAC study, with newly diagnosed and hormone-sensitive breast cancer, had already undergone surgery to remove the tumour, with or without ‘standard’ initial treatments for early breast cancer (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy).
