Encyclopedia > ATM Forum

The ATM Forum was founded in 1991 to be the industry consortium for Asynchronous Transfer Mode. It was a non-profit international organization. In its day, the ATM Forum was a vigorous industry body, creating over 200 implementation agreements. 1991 is a common year starting on Tuesday of the Gregorian calendar. ... Asynchronous Transfer Mode, or ATM for short, is a cell relay network protocol which encodes data traffic into small fixed sized (53 byte; 48 bytes of data and 5 bytes of header information) cells instead of variable sized packets as in packet-switched networks (such as the Internet Protocol or...

ATM technology stabilized with the "Anchorage Accord", which established the baseline of ATM implementations. While ATM did not live up to every expectation, it remains an important core network technology. In 2004, the ATM Forum joined forces with the MPLS & Frame relay alliance. 2004 is a leap year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar. ...

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Switching (7600 words)
ATM is a cell-switching and multiplexing technology that combines the benefits of circuit switching (guaranteed capacity and constant transmission delay) with those of packet switching (flexibility and efficiency for intermittent traffic).
The ATM physical layer has four functions: Cells are converted into a bitstream, the transmission and receipt of bits on the physical medium are controlled, ATM cell boundaries are tracked, and cells are packaged into the appropriate types of frames for the physical medium.
ATM signaling uses the one-pass method of connection setup that is used in all modern telecommunication networks, such as the telephone network.
The ATM Forum: Developing Implementation Agreements (4419 words)
ATM is fundamentally a very simple technology based on using fixed-size data units or "cells" in the transfer of information from the source to the destination.
The ATM Forum is open to anyone with an interest in ATM, and includes individuals, organizations, and companies representing all sectors of the communications and computer industries, as well as numerous government agencies from around the world, research organizations, and universities.
The ATM Forum specifications are developed to put ATM to work in many environments: multimedia to the desktop, multimedia WAN, LAN, and campus environments, as well as the essential specifications needed for deploying multiservice global networking infrastructures.
