ATypI is the Association Typographique Internationale, or the international typography association. It was originally formed as a type manufacturers group in 1957, with an annual general meeting and socializing. In the 1980s and 1990s it evolved to include independent type designers and users of type (typographers), and began hosting an annual conference, which is now the main activity of the association. The annual conference is hosted in a different world city every year. Recent conferences have been in Helsinki (2005), Prague (2004), Vancouver (2003), Rome, Cophenhage, Leipzig, and Boston. ATypI is incorporated as a US 501(c)3 non-profit organization. ATypI's board and membership are globally distributed, but the organization and conferences are primarily run in English.
