The consortium was created on July, 01, 1999 by splitting the state-own consortium China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) into AVIC I and AVIC II. AVIC I is mainly focused on the large plane, while AVIC II is mainly focused on smaller plane, such as trainer (JL-8, L-15, and CJ-6), small passenger airliner (Harbin Y-12), medium range transport aircraft (Y-8), and helicopters (Z-8, Z-9, WZ-10 and Z-11).
