Aalsmeer is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland; its name is derived from the Dutch for eel and lake[1]. Aalsmeer is bordered by the Westeinderplassen lake - the largest open water of the Randstad - and the Ring Canal[1]. The town is located 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of Amsterdam. The town of Aalsmeer lies on the ring canal of the Haarlemmermeer polder, southwest of Amsterdam.
During the Middle Ages the town owed its importance to fishing, stock-farming, the peat trade and, from 1450, horticulture, which became increasingly important as the nearby town of Amsterdam grew in size and population.
There are now well over 600 flower nurseries in Aalsmeer, the greenhouses cover an area of some 600 hectares/1,500 acres, and the annual turnover of the flower auctions is more than $200million.
