Aalter is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Aalter proper, Bellem, Lotenhulle and Poeke. On January 1st, 2004 Aalter had a total population of 18,672 (9,351 males and 9,321 females). The total area is 81.92 population density of 227.93 inhabitants per kmē.

Aalter (Municipality, Province of East Flanders, Belgium) (412 words)
The municipality of Aalter (18,887 inhabitants on 1 January 20057; 8,192 ha) is located 15 km west of Ghent and 30 km east of Bruges.
The villa Helftra became later the seat of the County of Aalter, ruled by the lord of the Woestijne (lit., the Desert).
The municipal flag of Aalter is quartered, first and fourth, red with a white cross moline; second and third, yellow with a fl leopard with a red tongue and nails.

Aalter is situated in a green leafy region midway between Bruges and Ghent and central also between Eeklo and Tielt-Deinze.
Aalter was on the border of this great region of heath and woods that stretched from Bruges to Ghent in the Middle Ages.
Greater Aalter, as we call these new mega-towns here, is the result of the merger since 1 January 1977 of the towns of Aalter (described on this page), Bellem, Lotenhulle and Poeke.
