Encyclopedia > Aaron Funk

Venetian Snares is the performing name of Aaron Funk, an electronic music producer and performer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada. He is known for making experimental IDM and breakcore in non-4/4 time signatures, and has released albums on the History of the Future, Isolate, Addict, Zod, Distort, Low-Res, Planet Mu, Sublight and Hymen record labels.

His 2003 album was entitled The Chocolate Wheelchair Album, and incorporates a number of samples, including the theme from Coronation Street (a popular British soap opera), a rendition of the theme tune to Sesame Street, Dr. Who and samples from the Disney film The Love Bug.

In 2004, he released a remix of the Boom Bip track The Unthinkable feat. Buck65 on the album Corymb on Lex Records. That album also included remixes by Boards of Canada, Four Tet, and cLOUDDEAD.

Reactions to his music are diverse. It proves too dense and complex for some, although an equal number of electronica fans connect with his unique and innovative style. He is rapidly developing a cult like following in the scene, especially within the online community.

Aaron Funk (408 words)
Better known by his recording alias Venetian Snares, Aaron Funk is one of the more astonishing musicians to emerge from the midwest breakcore scene in the early 00s.
Funk began self-releasing his music on cassettes in the late 1990s, culminating in his first twelve-inch, Greg Hates Car Culture (1999), on the now-defunct History of the Future label.
In these cases, Funk is able to take his sinister concept as leave to employ not just a specific (and precisely considered) timbral palette, but also a compounded set of rhythmic structures that suit the sadistic bent of these albums; indeed, it is on these albums that Funk's skill as a musician reveals itself.
02/9/04: Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) - Interview (882 words)
Aaron: Got something like 2583 files off some kid that's just him and his friends and their bong.
Aaron: Yeah I know who they are cuz they have a track called camel toe.
Aaron: She was all freaked out that she hadn't shit for days.
