Character outline

Renji is one of the more memorable characters in Bleach, even if only in terms of his appearance. He has long light crimson hair, usually kept in a high ponytail, and his entire body appears to be covered in tribal tattoo work. How he got these tattoos is unknown, but it appears that with every achievement Renji attains, his tattoos increase as well, from his early days as a shinigami candidate till when he was imprisoned by Byakuya Kuchiki (his tattoos cover his entire back at this point of time). He had no visible tattoos before entering the Shinigami Acadamy.

Like virtually all shinigami, Renji is most often seen in formal Japanese clothing, consisting of the following: A black kimono, black hakama pants and zori sandals. He occasionally tosses in a bit of headgear as well, usually consisting of either a bandana or sets of goggles (created by the 12th Division Technological Department used to sense Rukia's dwindling spiritual pressure in his debut and a different pair for his fight against Ichigo in Soul Society). As far as his personality goes, Renji is about as eccentric as any other shinigami. He varies from smug and cocky in his first appearances to downright angsty and depressed after his major defeats, but shows himself to be an incredibly serious and determined fighter when confronted with an actual challenge. Willing to fight, kill, and die for whatever he believes in, Renji is a dangerous man to those who stand in his way.

Renji Abarai came from the 78th district of Rukongai and grew up as an orphan with several other children, including Rukia Kuchiki. The company of children lived by stealing or hunting for food, but eventually they died one by one until only Renji and Rukia were left, which is when they decided to become shinigami. At the shinigami academy, Renji was admitted into the top class, being very adept at swordsmanship (zanjutsu), although quite inept at demon arts (kidō). His senpai (senior student) was Shūhei Hisagi. At the academy, Renji befriended Izuru Kira and Momo Hinamori, who each proceeded to become lieutenants. His relationship with Rukia became distant after her adoption by the Kuchiki family and he felt he had no place interfering with her life now that she was a noble, despite the fact they both seemed to regret losing the company and confidence of the other. Synopsis

We first meet Renji when he comes to the human world with his captain to arrest Rukia. There he is met by Uryū Ishida, whom he handily defeats. He goes on to fight Ichigo and unlocks Ichigo's hidden spiritual pressure. Ichigo is then defeated by Byakuya Kuchiki. UryÅ« Ishida, from the manga/anime series Bleach. ... After Renji returns to Soul Society and Ichigo's group invades, he blames Ichigo for Rukia's troubles and goes out to fight him. Renji is defeated and begs Ichigo to save Rukia. He is then healed but put in prison by Byakuya Kuchiki. He escapes and goes to Yoruichi Shihouin's hideout to train for bankai. During the battle, Renji and Byakuya both use their bankai. Despite his new-found and for a moment seemingly overwhelming power, Renji is soon shown to be too inexperienced to properly use bankai in battle. Renji's bankai is broken, and he is left almost dead.

Fortunately, one of his subordinates brings Hanatarō Yamada to him and Renji recovers enough to arrive just after Ichigo has stopped Rukia's execution. Ichigo throws Rukia off the Sōkyoku's stand to Renji and orders him to run and defend Rukia with his life. Renji willingly obliges and escapes from the execution grounds with Rukia in his arms. However, he doesn't make a complete escape, as Kaname Tōsen intercepts the two and returns them both to the execution ground. There, he refuses Sōsuke Aizen's command to leave Rukia, and attacks Aizen along with Ichigo Kurosaki, who has not recovered entirely from his encounter with Byakuya and is driven mostly by the desire to protect Rukia. After the events at Soul Society and the emerging threat of the Arankaru in the human world, Renji, along with Rukia and four other shinigami, are assigned to aid Ichigo Kurosaki in the living world. It would appear he is going to be living with Kisuke Urahara for the duration of his assignment. As of chapter 200 of the manga, Renji appears to be fighting with the arrancar Il Forte. In chapter 208, even his bankai appears to be no match for Il Forte's released zanpakutō (Del Toro) as its horns break through one of Renji's blades effortlessly. However, he, along with Hitsugaya and Rangiku, gains the license to "Lift the Limit", so that he can use more of his power. As he told Ichigo himself when they fought in Soul Society, when shinigami are sent to human world, they are not allowed to use too much power, for fear that it will negatively influence normal humans. He then easily defeats Il Forte.

Zabimaru

Zabimaru (蛇尾丸) is Renji Abarai's zanpakutō. It is one of the only two zanpakutō to be shown in their materialized form. Zabimaru is a nue (also sometimes called a Japanese chimera), hence the name of the sword (Zabi = snake tail). Renji says "Hoero Zabimaru" ("Howl, Zabimaru") for the initial release (shikai). The shikai form of Zabimaru is a sword-whip hybrid, with multiple pick-like blades extending from its cutting edge. In this form, it can be used as both a regular sword or, more commonly, as a sword-whip, similar to the one used by Ivy Valentine in Soul Calibur. Renji has a limit of three consecutive attacks before having to bring the segments of Zabimaru back together for recovery. At some point, he also learned to execute a one-shot omnidirectional attack called Higa Zekkō with Zabimaru even when the whip was broken, using his spiritual power to levitate the segments and hurl them at an enemy from all sides. Zabimaru's final release (bankai) looks like a giant skeletal snake, complete with a snapping head that looks to be the size of a small car. It is called Hihiō Zabimaru (狒狒王 蛇尾丸, lit, baboon king Zabimaru). It can both attack with its body and block attacks with its segmented vertebrae. This form does not need to have all the segments intact in order to fight, and is connected by the power of the user, making it extremely difficult (but not impossible) to damage or destroy. As Renji himself comments, "Zabimaru is bulky, but enduring."
