History

The old sellers of the Mercado Modelo associated and founded in 1889 the Sociedad Anónima Mercado de Abasto Proveedor ("Abasto Market Provider Anonymous Society"), which bought from the Deveto brothers the land and the concession to build the Mercado de Abasto.

Ten years later were opened a refrigerating storage and an ice factory, following the demands of the city on the hygiene standards of those times. Since the population, and therefor the consume, was steadily growing, it was necessary to construct a parking for the horses and vehicles. The demand again overcrowded the markets of the city, for what the construction of a new market in the location of the Abasto market was projected by architects Delpini, Sulsio and Besque; to works started on December 28 of 1931 with the fundamental stone, and finished in 1934. The new Mercado de Abastos has 44,000 , railway access and underground parking. In 1939 the sale of meat and fish was allowed. On October 14 of 1984 the central market was moved to the present Mercado Central, located outside the city of Buenos Aires, and the Abasto of Buenos Aires was closed, and left abandoned. October 14 is the 287th day of the year (288th in Leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. ...


It was not until the mid 1990s that projects for creating a shopping mall in the location of the Abasto were presented. In 1996 the building was sold to IRSA company, who restored the facade, and remodeled and conditioned its interior. the Abasto Shopping was opened in 1999, and is currently one of the most important malls in Argentina.
