Plot

Bud Jones (Bud Abbott) and Lou Hotchkiss (Lou Costello) are wrestling promoters. Their star, Abdullah (Wee Willie Davis) no longer wishes to follow the script for their crooked matches, especially since he is supposed to lose his next match. Therefore he leaves the US and returns to his homeland, Algeria. Their financers, a syndicate that has lent them $5,000 to bring Abdullah to the US, are now requiring them to return the money or face the consequences. The two men follow Adbullah to Algeria with the hopes of bringing him back. Meanwhile, Adbullah's cousin, Shiek Hamud El Khalid (Douglass Dumbrille) and a crooked Foreign Legionnaire, Sergeant Axmann (Water Slezak), have been raiding a railroad construction site in order to extort money from the railroad company. When Bud and Lou arrive, they are mistaken as spies of the railroad and the Shiek and Axmann try to kill them. However, as each attempt fails, their hatred for Bud and Lou grow, especially when Lou outbids the Shiek for six slave girls, one of whom, Nicole (Patrica Medina), is a French spy, sent to gain entry into the Shiek's camp. They are then chased and wind up hiding at the headquarters of the Foreign Legion, where Axmann convinces them to join. Douglass Dumbrille (October 13, 1889 – April 2, 1974) was an actor and one of the Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood. ...


Elsewhere, the Foreign Legion Commandant (Fred Nurney) suspects that their is a traitor, as the Shiek anticipates every one of the Legion's moves. The Commandant then grants Bud and Lou a pass into town where they meet up with Nicole. She informs them that they need to search Axmann's room, but he catches them in the act. However, they are spared and wind up at one of the Legionnaire's desert camps. Just before the camp is ambushed by the Shiek's men, Bud and Lou wander off in search of a camel and escape death. They are eventually captured, along with Nicole, and the Shiek orders that one of his wrestlers kill them. It turns out to be Abdullah, who helps them escape. They head to Fort Apar, where they lure the Shiek's men into and blow it up. They are given awards by the Commandant, and discharged from the Legion.

  • It was filmed from April 28 through May 29, 1950.
  • David Gorcey, a member of the comedy team The Bowery Boys, has a cameo appearance in this film.
  • Originally scheduled to begin filming in December 1949, it was postponned when Costello had to undergone an operation for a gangrenous gall bladder in November 1949.
  • Just before filming began, Abbott and Costello reconciled with their former agent, Eddie Sherman, whom they fired two years earlier, and rehired him.[1].
  • Despite having a stunt double, Costello did his own wrestling in the movie, and was rewarded with a wrenched arm socket and a stretched tendon.[2].
  • The voice of the skeleton in the film was provided by Candy Candido, who briefly became Abbott's partner in the 1960's after Costello had passed away.
