One of the founding leaders of Algeria's militant Islamist group Armed Islamic Group (GIA). Also known as Abu Adlane, he was sentenced to death in connection with his role in the Algerian civil war. Was released from prison in March 2006 under president Abdelaziz Bouteflika's project amnestying islamists under "national reconciliation". The Armed Islamic Group (GIA, from French Groupe Islamique Armé; Arabic al-Jamaah al-Islamiyah al-Musallah) is a militant Islamist group with the declared aim of overthrowing the Algerian government and replacing it with an Islamic state. ...
