Abdul Malik is a Uzbekwarlord/politician based out of Faryab Province in northern Afghanistan. He is currently head of the Afghanistan Liberation Party and was heavily involved the factional fighting that consumed Afghanistan for many years [1]. His arch-rival for control of the Uzbek north is Rashid Dostum, and their militias have clashed several times since the fall of the Taliban. Previous to the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, Malik's alliances shifted continuously, as was common, and he was at various times an ally and enemy of of Dotsum (see: Afghanistan timeline 1996–1999). Warlord is a term that refers to one who has de facto military control of a subnational area, due to armed forces which are personally obedient to â somewhat circularly â that warlord. ... AbdulMalik is not known to have played tamboura (a relative of the sitar used in North Indian music to produce a droning pad of the root, fourth and fifth, over which the sitar or other instrument improvises), and here he strums it aggressively, in a non-traditional manner.
Sadly AbdulMalik died in November 1993 so we can no longer ask him about this minor puzzle.
AbdulMalik was joined on the stage by Garvin Bushell, playing another unusual (for jazz) instrument, the oboe.
Abdul's currently shooting, directing, editing, writing and developing projects in NY, ATL and LA and is continuing to study, develop and fine-tune his crafts.
Abdul also directed and edited a "live" concert video for Columbia Records artist Kenny Lattimore, which was featured on a BET special and featured on an ABC networks "Live in concert" special.
