Encyclopedia > Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics

Founded in 1964, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) operates under a tripartite agreement between the Government of Italy and two UN agencies, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Centre is located along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, in northeast Italy, about 10 kilometres from the city of Trieste. Its goals are to: 1) Foster the growth of advanced studies and research in physics and mathematics, especially among researchers from developing countries; 2) Provide an international forum for the exchange of information and ideas among scientists from the North and South; 3) Maintain excellent research facilities for visitors, associates and fellows, principally from developing countries, who participate in the Centre's research and training activities.
