Encyclopedia > Abe Saperstein

Abe M. Saperstein (July 4, 1902 - March 15, 1966) is the famous creator of the "Savoy Big Five", which later became the "Harlem Globetrotters".


Born in London, England, he was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970. In 1979, he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.


He is buried in the Westlawn Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.

Abe Saperstein was 24 years old when he decided to coach a new basketball team, which he called the 'Savoy Big Five' because at that time, they were able to play basketball games at the Chicago Savoy Ballroom.
The name of the team changed to Saperstein's New York Globetrotters as they continued their tour, but in 1930 it became Harlem New York Globetrotters to signify that the players were all fl although none were from Harlem or New York.
Abe's achievements were recognised in 1970 when he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Abe Saperstein was founder, owner, and coach of the Harlem Globetrotters Basketball Team.
They are undoubtedly the most famous sports organization in the world, with Abe labeled the "Barnum Of Basketball", and his Trotters known as "America's Number One Goodwill Ambassadors".
Saperstein was also a pioneering entrepreneur in America's Negro Baseball League, and was a key figure in opening the way for Blacks into professional sports.
