Aberdeen is a city located in Monroe County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,415. It is the county seat of Monroe County6.


Geography

Aberdeen is located at 33°49'28" North, 88°32'59" West (33.824412, _88.549733)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.4 km² (11.0 mi²). 27.7 km² (10.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.19% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,415 people, 2,398 households, and 1,661 families residing in the city. The population density is 231.3/km² (598.8/mi²). There are 2,730 housing units at an average density of 98.4/km² (254.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 38.78% White, 60.20% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,398 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% are married couples living together, 29.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.14.


In the city the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 78.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,530, and the median income for a family is $27,611. Males have a median income of $27,857 versus $17,090 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,584. 29.6% of the population and 26.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.2% of those under the age of 18 and 26.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
