The Aberdeen Act of 1845 was a law signed into effect by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom on August 9th, giving the Royal Navy authority to search any Brazilian ship on the high seas. The act, created by BritishForeign MinisterLord Aberdeen, was designed to suppress the Brazilian slave trade in accordance with Britain's role as world policeman. It provoked much outrage from Brazil, who saw it as a violation of the freedom of the seas and of their territorial integrity. 1845 was a common year starting on Wednesday (see link for calendar). ... The Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 determined that on and after 1 April 1996, Scotland should be divided into local government areas as named and described in Schedule 1 to the Act and that, for each area, there should be a council consisting of a convener and councillors.
The designation of the electoral wards that we recommend for Aberdeen City Council, together with information which we have received from the Council as to the 1996 electorate and forecast 2001 electorate of the proposed wards are set out at Appendix C to this report.
There is an obvious problem in the application of the Act if there is or can be a significant discrepancy between the constituency taken into account in determining the number of councillors for a local government area and the constituency taken into account in the distribution of electoral wards within the area.
