Geographically, it is situated in the Swedish province of Lappland right by the Norwegian border, and belongs to Kiruna Municipality, Sweden's northernmost, and largest, municipality. It starts from the shores of Torne träsk, one of Sweden's largest lakes where the small town Abisko is located, and extends some 15 kilometers to the south-west. It is about 200 kilometers north of the Arctic circle. The total area is 7,700 hectares (77 km²). The provinces or landskap were the subdivision of Sweden until 1634, when they were replaced by counties in a reform, led by Axel Oxenstierna, that still remains in force in Sweden proper. ... The intentions of the Abisko National Park was to "preserve an area with a northern Nordic fjeld nature in its original condition and as a reminence for scientific research". Furthermore, the national park was intended to be a prominent tourism attraction.


Tourism wise, the walk and wildlife road called Kungsleden which trails by the Scandinavian mountain range, starts (or ends) in the town Abisko and follows through the national park. Fauna

There are quite a few species of birds in the park.


Of the largest mammals , smaller ones like the marten, stoat, squirrel, the fjeld lemming and similar are commons part of the fauna. Of larger animals, the elk is common, and elk droppings and tracks are found everything; however, wolverines , arctic foxes, lynx and bears are only seen sporadically.
