Ablative armour plating was introduced to the U.S.S Voyager in the episodes Endgame by Admiral Janeway who had travlled back in time in order to return Voyger to Earth faster. The armour is used in the episodes while Voyager fights the Borg on route to a Trans-warp Hub which will enable them to cross the galaxy in minutes and arrive at Earth.

Ablative armor is distinct from the concept of reactive armor, which uses a sandwich layer of explosives to disrupt the thrust of armor piercing ammunition, and is actually in common use in modern armored vehicles.
