Background

Abraham Malpan was one of the main reformers of the Malankara Church. He was born in 1796 to the Palakunnathu family. When Abraham Malpan was a child he lost his parents due to illness and was raised by his uncle Thomas Malpan. Later he went to a seminary, learned syriac and ordained as a priest by Mar Thoma 8th in malayalam era 900. During the 1790s CMS missionaries came to Kerala and started their work in Kottayam. CMS missionaries appointed Abraham Malpan to work as a Syriac professer. As a result the CMS missionaries got to him and he knew that their must be change in the Malankara Church. He along with 10 other priests submitted a letter to the British about all of the malfunctions of the church. Chepat Mar Dionysus the metropolitian stopped programs with the CMS eventually priests with Abraham Malpan stopped supporting him. But his close associate Kaithayil Geevarghese Malpan and him stood firm. Later Abraham Malpan sent his nephew Deacon Mathew to the Patriarch in Syria to be ordained episcopa. Eventually he was ordained as Mathews Mar Antanasius. On his way back to Kerala he recivied a royal proclaimation which was againist Abraham Malpans wishes. The proclaimation ment that Mathews Mar Anthanasius was Malankara Metropolitian. Abraham Malpan was later excommunicated and retreated to Maramon were the first revised Holy Qurbana took place. He served the church until his death in 1021 and is known today as the Eastern Wickliffe.

Abraham Malpan realized that unless he had the support of a bishop who was sympathetic towards his reforms, there was little prospect of the movement gaining ground.
