The Academy Awards are the oldest awards given to achievements in film; the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was given the first time for the 2001 film year. It was introduced because the previous year, the people at the Academy Awards were disappointed that the hugely successful Chicken Run had not been nominated for Best Picture in 2000, so the Best Animated Feature category was introduced the following year. AcademyAward® for BestAnimatedFeature to be Given for 2001
The BestAnimatedFeature category was created in September, 2000, by the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which voted last night to present it for the first time in March, 2002.
Nine films were declared eligible to compete by the executive committee of the Short Films and FeatureAnimation branch of the Academy, which recommended to the board of governors that the Award be given for this year.
The Awards are granted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional honorary organization which as of 2003 had a voting membership of 5816, with actors, with a membership of 1311, making up the largest voting block.
AcademyAwards are nicknamed "Oscars", which is also the nickname of the statuette (the name is said to have been born when Academy librarian Margaret Herrick saw the statuette on a table and said: "It looks just like my uncle Oscar!").
The awards night itself is an elaborate extravaganza, with the invited guests walking up the red carpet in the creations of the most prominent fashion designers (who usually loan them to the stars to gain publicity).
