Accomac is a town located in Accomack County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 547. It is the county seat of Accomack County6.

Geography

Accomac is located at 37°43'7" North, 75°40'2" West (37.718678, _75.667323)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 547 people, 199 households, and 125 families residing in the town. The population density is 515.1/km˛ (1,322.1/mi˛). There are 235 housing units at an average density of 221.3/km˛ (568.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 71.12% White, 24.68% African American, 0.00% Native American, 2.56% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 2.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 199 households out of which 22.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.71.


In the town the population is spread out with 14.8% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 131.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 136.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $37,500, and the median income for a family is $51,250. Males have a median income of $34,375 versus $23,929 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,050. 6.2% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


History

The Accomack County Court was located here by the 1690s, but it wasn't until 1786 that Virginia officially established a town at this location called Drummond. Drummondtown was renamed Accomac in 1893.
