An acid mantle is a very fine film, with a slightly acidic pH, which rests on the surface of our skin, acting as a barrier to diseases and the elements. Many of the contaminants that might enter our skin, such as chemicals from the atmosphere and harmful bacteria, are alkaline in nature, but our slightly acidic skin helps to fight off these harmful elements.
