The term climate change is used to refer to changes in the Earth's global climate or regional climates.
In recent usage, especially in the context of environmental policy, the term "climate change" is often used to refer only to the ongoing changes in modern climate, including the average rise in surface temperature known as global warming.
However there are several examples of rapid changes in the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere that do appear to have led to strong warming, including the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum, the Permian-Triassic extinction event, and the end of the Varangian snowball earth event.

The Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an amendment to the international treaty on climate change, assigning mandatory targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to signatory nations.
It is an agreement negotiated as an amendment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC, which was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992).
An international day of action was planned for 3 December 2005, to coincide with the Meeting of the Parties in Montreal.
