The first battle took place on 9 February 1695 near Cape Kara Burun, western Turkey, when a Venetian fleet commanded by Zeno was defeated by a Turkish fleet. Venetian casualties were 142 killed and 300 wounded on the sailing ships, exclusive of the 3 ships lost, and 323 killed and 303 wounded on the oared vessels. All together, less than 2500 casualties.
