Encyclopedia > ActiveSync

ActiveSync is a synchronisation program developed by Microsoft Corporation. The purpose of the program is to synchronise files, favourites, Personal information manager data etc. between a Windows PC and a PDA running Windows Mobile or Windows CE for Handheld PC or for Palm-size PC. It is designed to synchronise PIM data with Microsoft Outlook, although alternative software is available for some non-Microsoft PIMs - such as FinchSync for Thunderbird, or Intellisync. ActiveSync keeps your computer and PDA (or other palm sized device) up to date, with emails, appointments, notes, tasks and much more. It allows the installation of programs or games to PDA's and is used as the conversion point for file transfer between PDA's and Computers. Active sync requires Microsoft Outlook to be installed on the computer for syncronisation to occur. For email to be syncronised correctly, activesync can only use a POP3 (Post Office Portal) or IMAP account.
