Acura EL was a small family sedan by Honda based on the extremely popular Civic sedan, and was available only in Canada. This sedan is known in Japan as the Honda Domani. The 1.6 EL was introduced in 1997 as a sportier luxury version of the Civic. It was re-designated the 1.7 EL in 2001 to correspond with the redesigned Civic. In addition to the slightly more powerful 1.7L 4 cylinder SOHC VTEC engine, it also featured a complete leather interior and distinctive headlights and taillights design.
