High school career

Carriker attended Kennewick High School, where he played Quarterback and defensive end. In his only season at defensive end (his senior season), he recorded 25 tackles, 15 sacks, and four forced fumbles in a winless season. Regardless, he was named to 2nd-team All-Big 9 Honors. Carriker visited Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State before finally deciding to commit to Nebraska.


College career

In 2003, Carriker began to play extensively, until he injured his ankle against Utah State. He returned with a vengeance three games later, and recorded 2 tackles against Iowa State before he broke out against Colorado. In 2004, Carriker impressed the coaching staff enough in training camp to become the starter at right end. However, he was hampered by his ankle once again. After the season, Carriker dominated the Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Alabama. He showed off his rare blend of size and speed, frustrating offensive tackles all week. He proved to be a disruptive force during the game itself. Carriker had a great showing at the NFL Combine and his draft stock rose tremendously. Due to his rare physical abilities, Carriker may be the best 3-4 DE prospect to come out of college since Richard Seymour, and looks to be an even more athletic clone of the Pittsburgh Steelers' Aaron Smith.
