Early life

He went to school in Surrey. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge where he was awarded a MA in Social and Political Sciences and at Imperial College London where he earned an MBA. Before entering parliament, he served in the British Army with the Grenadier Guards and worked as an investigative journalist with ITN, World in Action, Panorama and the Sunday Times. During his military career he saw active combat in the Gulf War. He was elected in the 2005 General Election for the Kent constituency of Gravesham, defeating the Labour minister, Chris Pond by just 654 votes, acquiring one of the largest swings from Labour to Conservative in the country at 4.9%.
