Adam Rainer (1899–4 March1950), of Austria, is the only man in recorded human history ever to have been both a dwarf and a giant. In 1920 at the age of 21, Adam Rainer was measured at 1.18m [3ft 10.5 inches]. Then for unknown reasons he had a dramatic 1 metre growth spurt so that by 1931 he had reached a height of 2.18 (7ft 1.75 inches). As a result of his extreme growth he became bed-ridden for the rest of his life. When he died in 1950 he had reached an incredible height of 2.34 metres (7ft 8 inches), growing 46 inches during his adult years.
