Adams County is a county located in the U.S. state of Idaho. As of 2000, the population is 3,476. Its name is in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams. The county's county seat is Council6.


Adams County is home to the Idaho ground squirrel.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,548 km˛ (1,370 mi˛). 3,534 km˛ (1,365 mi˛) of it is land and 14 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,476 people, 1,421 households, and 1,031 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). There are 1,982 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.29% White, 1.41% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.92% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,421 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.30% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.83.


In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 22.60% from 25 to 44, 32.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 105.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,423, and the median income for a family is $32,335. Males have a median income of $29,097 versus $14,408 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,908. 15.10% of the population and 11.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.90% of those under the age of 18 and 11.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
