Encyclopedia > Adams family

For the macabre group of characters created by Charles Addams and featured in cartoons, television, and movies, see The Addams Family.

The Adams family was a prominent political family in the United States during the late eighteenth century through early twentieth century.

The most important members included:

  • Samuel Adams (1722-1803), American Revolutionary
  • John Adams (1735-1826), Samuel's second cousin, second President of the United States
  • Abigail Adams (1744-1818), John's wife, the First Lady, the mother of John Quincy Adams, and an influential society woman
    • John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), John and Abigail's son, sixth President of the United States
      • Charles Francis Adams, Sr. (1807-1866), his son, United States Congressman and Ambassador to the United Kingdom
        • John Quincy Adams (1833-1894), son of Charles Francis Adams, Sr., lawyer and politician
        • Charles Francis Adams, Jr. (1835-1915), son of Charles Francis Adams, Sr., brigadier-general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was president of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1884 to 1890.
        • Henry Adams (1838-1918), third son of Charles Francis Adams, Sr., a prominent author and political commentator

The Adams family is one of only four families to have produced two Presidents of the United States, the others being the Bush family, the Roosevelt political family, and the Harrison political family. Concurrent references do not indicate similarities in breadth of integrity.
