Adamson University (AdU) or simply Adamson is one of the largest private Catholic university in Manila, Philippines.^{[citation needed]} It was founded on June 30, 1932 by the late Dr. George Lucas Adamson, who was shortly joined by his cousins, Alexander Adamson and George Athos Adamson, as the Adamson School of Industrial Chemistry. History

Dr. George Lucas Adamson, a Greek chemist from Athens, founded the Adamson School of Industrial Chemistry (ASIC) on June 20, 1932 to train young men and women along the lines of practical industrial chemistry. It started as a one-classroom school that evolved into the Adamson School of Industrial Chemistry and Engineering (ASICE) on February 19, 1936. Upon approval by the Secretary of Public Instruction of its application for university status on February 5, 1941, it became known as Adamson University (AdU).

Shortly after the opening, the Founder invited his cousin Alexander Athos Adamson to work in the school. The latter joined the administration on July 15, 1932, serving at one time or another as Vice-President, Treasurer and Registrar. Much later, Alexander’s brother, George Athos Adamson, also came to work in the school in 1934, as school Dean, Dean of the College of Engineering and professor. Evdoxia Savaides Adamson, wife of George Lucas, started working and teaching in the University in 1939, then served as Dean of the College of Education and of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Sofia Adamson, George Athos's wife, taught in the College of Education after arriving in 1939 and briefly served as Directress of the Junior Normal College. Except for George Athos, who left after the war with his wife, all the Adamsons remained working in the University until its turnover to the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers of the Congregation of the Mission in 1964. George Lucas Adamson served as President from the beginning until 1967, for a total of 35 years including a three-year holdover stint. Before finally settling on its permanent home along San Marcelino St. in 1946 after the war, the school stayed in three different locations, namely: Sta. Cruz (1932-1933), San Miguel (1933-1939) and Intramuros (1939-1941). Fr. Leandro I. Montañana, C.M., a Spanish Vincentian was the second President, but the first under the C.M. administration. He served in that capacity until 1985 when Fr. Rolando S. Dela Goza, C.M., the first Filipino President, succeeded him all the way to 1994. Next came Fr. Jimmy Belita, C.M., University President until 2003 who in turn was succeeded by the current President Fr. Gregorio L. Bañaga, Jr., C.M.

Although best known for its Chemistry and Engineering programs, Adamson University gradually added Architecture, Sciences, Pharmacy, Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Law, Graduate, and Theology courses as it grew bigger. In the ‘90s, it registered its highest enrollment figure ever: 21,994 students. The transfer of ownership in 1964 incorporated the University into the Adamson-Ozanam Educational Institutions, Inc. It also led to its transition from a secular to a Catholic institution, with the Vincentians holding top administrative posts and becoming majority members of the Board of Trustees. St. Vincent de Paul, founder of the C.M., was declared University Patron Saint and the motto “Veritas in Caritate” (Truth in Charity) was adopted. A new vision was articulated, basically that of offering affordable quality education especially for the socially disadvantaged - one not substantially different from the Founder’s who wanted to help Filipinos gain a livelihood by offering a maximum amount of practical education in a minimum amount of time. In keeping up with the new millennium’s challenges and demands, the University responded by offering information technology and health care courses. Student Life

The University's commitment to the formation, growth and education of the students include recognition that they are preparing for life in a world of wider social structurem new and challenging knowledge, skills and technology, in an emerging community and its commitment expectations in the world of work. Towards this end, University provides opportunities for the students' exposure to situations and events as well as to experience of faith and life through involvement in academic, community, professional and religious programs and activities. The entire Adamson University community, which includes the faculty, administrators and staff, encourages and supports the students' search for wisdom or knowledge and ensures the integrated formation of the students. Various co-curricular activities are developed to complement the education received in classrooms. The Office for Student Affairs (OSA) assumes the responsibility of facilitating the growth and development of students. The OSA works in close collaboration with the Vice-President for Student Affairs (VPSA) in the implementation of policies promoting students' welfare. The OSA-Discipline provides the atmosphere of peace and safety essential to the pursuit of knowledge. It resolves disciplinary problems through the involvement of the different sectors of the academic community as well as the parents of the students.

President

Fr. Gregorio Bañaga Jr. CM -President of Adamson Universiy

Fr. Gregg was born in Tarlac City on October 31, 1953. He studied at Holy Spirit College and Don Bosco Institute in Tarlac. After graduating from elementary, he entered the seminary of the Congregation of the Missions, popularly known as the Vincentians. His college years were spent at Adamson University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy. He continued his studies in Theology at UST finishing in 1979. In March of that year he was ordained a priest.

The first years of his priesthood were spent giving popular missions to some of the outlaying areas of Rizal, Bataan, Camarines Sur and Pangasinan. His work in the missions was interrupted when he was assigned for one and a half years as parish priest of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Manila. After eight years conducting rural missions he was sent to the St. Vincent School of Theology in Quezon City to become the Director of Students and professor of pastoral theology. He taught in that major seminary for four years.

While working in the missions and teaching in the seminary, Fr. Gregg was also involved with an international non-governmental organization called the Movement for a Better World. He became the East Asian coordinator of this group for six years and facilitated training programs in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Burma, Japan, and Korea.

In August of 1992, he was sent to the United States to continue his graduate studies. He started his master's degree in Organizational Development at Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, he worked in a parish and was consultant to the Ethnic Ministries of Archdiocese of Chicago.

In August of 1993, he joined the doctoral program in Organizational Behavior of the Weatherland School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. Ohio. During the six years that he studied in Cleveland, he worked at a parish and became the Spiritual Director of the Philippine American Community and Chaplain of University Hospitals.

He finished his doctoral degree in Organizational Behavior in January 2000. He is presently the President of Adamson University, Manila. ^[2]

Teaching of Religion

After the Vincentians took over the University, twelve units of theology courses were required for graduation.^{[citation needed]} This means that a student had to stay in class for around 150 hours before he is given his graduation diploma from Adamson University. During a particular semester as many as 8,000 students are taking one of the four subjects in theology: Introductory Course in Theology, The Bible, Dogma and the Sacraments, Morals and Ethics. Some of the Vincentian administrators willingly spend hours in the classroom but the vast majority of the professors are laymen and women, some of them Ladies of Charity and members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, who have degrees in Catholic Theology.

An introductory course in religion (Theology I) is required for all students.^{[citation needed]}

Vincentian priests guide and direct the Theology Department, which was for many years has been under the chairmanship of a priest. For the past few years, as many as 25 professors teach in the department of theology. Special ongoing formation was given to the theology faculty members in the form of seminars, lectures and special courses in the various theological centers in the country. Some of the theology professors have written textbooks for the use of their students.^{[citation needed]} Many priests have taught basic theology at Adamson University.

All year round, the Theology department undertakes special programs for the students: retreats by groups, special Masses on various occasions, confessions on first Friday, apostolate with the prisoners and the sick, teaching of catechesis in addition to the daily Masses held on campus. Practically all the freshmen and the graduating classes had to undergo a one or two-day retreat in preparation for entering the school year and for graduation year. Generally, the priest-chairman, the campus minister and the five or six priests assigned to the University give the retreat. But due to the large number of retreatants, around 4,000 students a year, other priests from the neighboring areas are asked to help out. For many students, these retreats are the first retreats of their life and they are inspired to take their spiritual life seriously. This is the time when some are encouraged to become priests or nuns. There are dozens of Sisters who were students of Adamson University; many students became Vincentian seminarians and two have been ordained priests.^{[citations needed]}

Vincentian Apostolate

Although Adamson University was founded as a secular school, when the Vincentian Fathers took over, they introduced several important religious programs to place it in line with the general ideals of Catholic education. A theology department was opened, campus ministry was strengthened, Masses were held daily, religious icons and celebrations were introduced on the University campus.^{[citation needed]} These diverse apostolic activities were based not only on the various guidelines from the Holy See which looks at education as a most important apostolate but also from the experiences of Vincentian Universities around the world.^{[citation needed]} File history Legend: (cur) = this is the current file, (del) = delete this old version, (rev) = revert to this old version. ... Integrated Community Extension Service (ICES)

The Integrated Community Extension Services (ICES) is another Vincentian service arm of the University specifically instituted to reach out to the underprivileged members of society. A yearly report noted the following activities of ICES: "Although it is relatively new, it has attracted the attention of many groups, especially the accreditation councils, for its untiring efforts in reaching out to the underprivileged members of society. Its occupational skills program graduated 316 students, its food processing seminars had 49 participants, the dressmaking class had 56.^{[citation needed]}

The Vincentian Fathers, through the Adamson University ICES office, saw another instrument of their apostolic ministry. With hundreds of people who benefitted by the occupational skills, food processing and dressmaking programs,^{[citation needed]} they opened other projects. There were training for computer skills, automotive, and electrical skills. Many of the trainers were volunteers from among faculty members and students of the University. One of the most popular and effective training programs was computer literacy for youth.
