Adda was one of several sons born to Ida, the first ruler of Bernicia,a s was his successor Æthelric. He led the Bernicians to victory against Peredur and Gwrgi of Ebrauc. Ebrauc ceased to exist as a British kingdom after the battle, Deira taking over its territory. Nothing else is known for certain about Adda's life or reign. The earliest authorities differ widely on the order and the regnal years of the Bernician kings between the death of Ida and the beginning of Æthelfrith's rule in 592/593. The Anglian territory of Bernicia was approximately equivalent to the modern counties of Northumberland and Durham, stretching from the Tweed to the Tees.
Bernicia is mentioned in Old Welsh poetry, in the writings of Nennius and elsewhere under the name of Bryneich or Brynaich.
Bernicia was then briefly ruled by Eanfrith, son of Aethelfrith, but after about a year he went to Cadwallon to sue for peace and was killed.
