Adder is the name of several snakes, most belonging to the viper family, especially the Viperinae subfamily (pitless vipers). However, there are a few exceptions: the death adder is not a viperid at all, but a member of the family Elapidae (cobras and coral snakes); and the totally harmless hognose snakes (members of the Colubridae family) are sometimes referred to as puff adders because of their threat display. Most snakes called adders belong to the family Viperidae, more precisely to subfamily viperinae (by contrast to pit vipers).
An exception is the Australian Death adder, which despite its name is not a viperid at all, but rather a member of the cobra family, Elapidae.

In Victorian times the Adder was described as not abundant in the county, being absent from alluvial areas and mainly found in sandy or stony places.
The Adder is the only native snake having elliptical, as opposed to round pupils.
The Adder is typically found in heathland and moorland but in Warwickshire it is associated with railway embankments, rough grassland and scrub.
