Is there a place for Islam in Michael Saakashvili’s Christian Georgia? [3/3] - CAUCAZ.COM (2258 words)
One of the consequences of the reduced Ottoman presence in Adjaria in the nineteenth century benefiting the new Russian presence in the region, was the immigration of a significant number of Adjarians to the Ottoman Empire.
In Adjaria, as in the former Soviet Union in general – or even the former Socialist bloc since the same phenomenon occurred in the Balkans -, even before the declarations of independence, religious groups from Turkey with their combination of entrepreneurial and missionary spirit, sought to export their religious teachings.
Adjaria is also, and most importantly, missionary territory where Turks do not have to compete against other Islamic countries, such as Iran, whose brand of Shiite Islam is instead attracted to Shiite Azeris from Kvemo Kartli.
Adjaria declares emergency, imposes an autonomy-wide curfew - Pravda.Ru (433 words)
The parliament of Adjaria acted Saturday to renew the national state of emergency and set a daily curfew for all of Adjaria.
As relayed to Rosbalt by the parliament, the action was a response to the adoption by Georgia's parliament on April 22 of a special resolution on the situation in Adjaria.
Parliament imposed the emergency in Adjaria on November 23, 2003, in the wake of the triumph of the so-called 'velvet revolution of roses.' It was then temporarily relaxed for the presidential and parliamentary elections in Georgia.
