Encyclopedia > Adnan Hajj

Adnan Hajj is a Lebanese freelance photographer based in the Middle East, who worked for Reuters over a period of more than 10 years. He is known for a number of dramatic photographs of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the veracity of which have come under scrutiny after it has become known that at least two have been shown to have been significantly manipulated before being published. In the ensuing Adnan Hajj photographs controversy, he was sacked by Reuters after the exposure of the pictures' manipulation[1]. On August 6, 2006, Reuters announced it would stop all cooperation with Hajj after the first doctored photo had been exposed by several news blogs, most notably Little Green Footballs[2]. According to Reuters's head of public relations, Hajj claimed he had just been trying to remove dust marks, and that he made mistakes due to the bad lighting conditions he was working under[3]. Critics rejected his claim, stating that Hajj's doctored photo added an entire plume of smoke, duplicated several buildings, and showed a repeating pattern indicating that at least eighteen separate copy/paste functions were used on one plume of smoke. A second doctored photograph by Hajj, dated August 2, showed an Israeli F-16 fighter over Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon. It had been manipulated to increase from one to three the number of flares dropped by the aircraft. After being made aware of this second manipulated image, Reuters decided on August 7, 2006 to remove Hajj's entire portfolio of 920 photos in its database from sale. However, the agency also stated that this "doesn't mean that every one of his 920 photographs in our database was altered. Other photographs by Hajj have been questioned by critics scrutinizing his images of a rescue worker retrieving the body of a child said to have been killed in Israel's bombardment of Qana.[6] Bloggers have claimed to have found unexplained inconsistencies in the dates of Hajj's photographs [7], duplications of the subjects being depicted [8] and inaccurate or inconsistent captioning [9].
