Adolph Northen (also credited as Adolf Northen,[1] Adolf Northern[2] or Adolph Northern)[3] (November 6, 1828 - May 28, 1876) was a 19th century German painter. He was born in Münden, Hannover and was a pupil of Düsseldorf Painting Academy.[4] Chiefly depicting battle scenes, and paricularly events of the Napoleonic Wars, Northen's most noted works include Napoleon's retreat from Moscow and Prussian Attack, which depict the failure of the 1812 invasion of France by Napoleon and the Prussian divisions of Hiller, Ryssel and Tippelskirch defeating the French Imperial Young Guard, 1st Battalions of the 2nd Grenadiers and 2nd Chasseurs at the Battle of Waterloo respectively.[5] Northern died in Düsseldorf aged 48.[4] is the 310th day of the year (311th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. ...
