The Adolph F. Rupp Trophy is an award given annually to the top player in men's Division I NCAA basketball. It is considered one of the top awards in college basketball. The recipient of the award is selected by an independent panel consisting of national sportwriters, coaches, and sports administrators. The trophy is presented each year at the site of the Final Four. Adolph Rupp Summary (804 words)
Rupp's legacy has one major flaw in the minds of many observers: he was widely regarded as a racial segregationist, or at the very least unwilling to recruit fl players.
Rupp was among the first coaches in the two major southern conferences, the SEC and ACC, to recruit African-American players.
Rupp was forced into retirement in 1972 after reaching age 70, at that time the mandatory retirement age for Kentucky state employees.

Rupp was born outside Halstead, Kansas to Mennonite German immigrants, the fourth of six children.
Rupp's apologists note that while he refused to include any African American players on his own teams through the 1950s and and 1960s, he was at least willing to play against integrated teams.
Rupp died at age 76 in Lexington on December 10, 1977, the very night UK defeated his alma mater, Kansas, at Allen Fieldhouse in a game that was promoted as "Adolph Rupp Night".
