After the completion of Basic Combat Training, United States Army soldiers undergo Advanced Individual Training (AIT) where they attain the skills to perform their job in the United States Army. There are many diverse AIT schools, where new soldiers receive hands-on training and field instruction in the specific career field into which the soldier enlisted. Depending on the MOS, soldiers may move to a completely different army post for AIT, or, in the case of "one station unit training" (OSUT), may remain at the same post and basic training unit for AIT.


Different military branches may call their "technical school" or AIT by different names, but they are all essentially similar.


The United States Army has their schools divided primarily among the different Army Corps.

Critique to drill is that it is a fairly inefficient method of training, based on behavioristic method, which does not enable the subjects to learn anything by heuristics, and can be used only to instill very simple and trivial things, like series of movements, therefore consuming resources from combat and weapons training.
Army and Marine recruits are trained in basic marksmanship with individually-assigned weapons, field maintenance of weapons, hand-to-hand combat, physical fitness training, first aid, protective equipment usage, and basic survival techniques.
Advanced technical training, called A School, is conducted at several other bases, including NTC (Naval Training Center) Great Lakes, Naval Station Norfolk, NAS Pensacola, and NS Groton, depending on the sailor's rating.

Basic training is conducted on a demanding schedule, but each Soldier progresses at the rate he or she can handle best.
