The program concept was inspired by the groundbreaking Pinball Construction Set (PCS) that had come out a couple years earlier; provide a graphical editor for the construction of maps, placement of creatures, etc, then let the designer use those to create a standalone game that can be shared with friends. The resulting game was a top_down view similar to Ultima_type games. The ACS came with a predesigned game, "Rivers of Light," to show off the design program's capability.
Reviews of the ACS were mixed. Although the PCS was revolutionary, ACS was soon challenged by other, better, construction kits, and in any case it soon became clear that they only automated the easy mechanical parts of game construction; good game design was still difficult and time-consuming.
Adventure is a genre of video game typified by exploration, puzzle-solving, interaction with game characters, and a focus on narrative rather than reflex-based challenges.
The adventure genre was quite popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and many considered it to be among the most technically advanced genres.
Adventure games based on the Nancy Drew books are published by Her Interactive and comprise a series of over twelve titles published since 2000.
