Aelius was the nomen of the ancient Roman gens Aelia.


The Pons Aelius, now called the Ponte San Angelo, is a bridge in Rome built by Hadrian. Aelia Capitolina was the city Hadrian founded on the ruins of Jerusalem.

AELIUS DONATUS, Roman grammarian and teacher of rhetoric, flourished in the middle of the 4th century A.D. The only fact known regarding his life is that he was the tutor of St Jerome.

Aelius Donatus is to be distinguished from Tiberius Claudius Donatus, the author of a commentary (Inter pretationes) on the Aeneid (of far less value than that of Servius), who lived about fifty years later.
