Encyclopedia > Aerosol

Aerosol, is a term derived from the fact that matter "floating" in air is a suspension (a mixture in which solid or liquid or combined solid-liquid particles are suspended in a fluid). To differentiate suspensions from true solutions, the term sol evolved—originally meant to cover dispersions of tiny (sub-microscopic) particles in a liquid(however you can see it in the air when it is sprayed. It looks like a mist.). With studies of dispersions in air, the term aerosol evolved and now embraces both liquid droplets, solid particles, and combinations of these. A fluid is defined as a substance that continually deforms (flows) under an applied shear stress regardless of the magnitude of the applied stress. ... This article or section is in need of attention from an expert on the subject. ... Dissolving table salt (NaCl) in water This article is about a chemical solution; for other uses of the term solution, see solution (disambiguation). ... Dispersion can mean any of several things: A phenomenon that causes the separation of a wave into components of varying frequency. ... See also drop (telecommunication). ... In physics, a particle is an object, or body, with only a few degrees-of-freedom, including position, and perhaps orientation in space. ... In combinatorial mathematics, a combination of members of a set is a subset. ...

As a common term, aerosol would be interpreted by the general population as meaning an aerosol spray can or output from such a can. In scientific terms it refers to airborne solid particles also called dust or particulate matter (PM) as well as liquid droplets.

Direct observations of the effects of aerosols are quite limited so any attempt to estimate their global effect necessarily involves the use of models.
the uncertainties relating to aerosol radiative forcings remain large, and rely to a large extent on the estimates from global modelling studies that are difficult to verify at the present time [1] (http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/237.htm#678).
Colloquially, an aerosol (short for aerosol spray) is a canister holding a liquid under pressure from a compressed gas.

Sulfate aerosols [1] consists of the sulfate anion existing in various chemical states: sulfuric acid, ammonium bisulfate, ammonium sulfate, or as a dissociated anion in aqueous solution.
Sea-salt aerosol [2], the second largest contributor the global aerosol budget, consists mainly of sodium chloride salt from seawater.
the uncertainties relating to aerosol radiative forcings remain large, and rely to a large extent on the estimates from global modelling studies that are difficult to verify at the present time [5].
