An affogato [roughly rhymes with avocado] is an Italian dessert/drink. The word literally means 'to drown', but in reference to the edible item, it means drowning in coffee or espresso. It is usually a single scoop of vanilla gelato with a single shot of espresso poured over top and served immediately. The flavor is simultaneously smooth and bitter. There is only a little more espresso than gelato, so if it is properly made, it should not melt the gelato too much, and you should get a nice combination of textures as well. Affogatos can also be made with regular ice cream with a strong coffee, but you will not get the same intense flavor. You can also make it with different flavor of gelato (chocolate, for example) to try a Mocha Affogato or Peppermint Affogato.

Affogato was voted #1 coffeehouse in Pittsburgh for 2005 and 2006. Located in Bellevue, a suburb of Pittsburgh, it is a staple of the community. With live music on Friday nights, a BYOB bar and open mic nights, there is plenty of opportunity for entertainment, not to mention the high quality food and drinks. Bellevue (French, meaning beautiful view) is the name of many places in many countries: Australia Bellevue, Western Australia See also: Bellevue Hill, New South Wales Canada: Bellevue, Alberta Bellevue, Newfoundland and Labrador Bellevue, Ontario Bellevue, Prince Edward Island Bellevue, Saskatchewan Germany: Schloss Bellevue is the official residence of the President...

It's called Affogato, though from the outside the only marker you'll see is the giant red "a" mounted on the facade, like a lost but hopeful dot.com start-up.
Affogato is a perfect place to overhear things, especially if the gregarious proprietor, Sam DiBattista, of Vivo fame, is in the house, making plans, receiving shipments, chatting up the regulars and travelers who keep the place humming.
Panini are perfectly portable, and traditionally meant to be eaten on the go, but Affogato is such a nice place to linger, it's a shame not to.
Jun 21, 2005 1:26:06 PM I concur with the opinion that it is a grande mocha affogato style (tm) no whip mint mocha frappucino(tm) blended coffee.
I love telling people the story behind affogato because I personally love having espresso drizzled over my gelato (though it has to be soy gelato otherwise I'm dead, and not the stomach-ache type lactose-intolerant dead, I mean the throat swelling up and dying type).
Affogato, in Italian cuisine, is just the term for a shot of espresso poured over a frozen dessert.
