Ag’waneq, soimetimes called Afognak, was a village on the island of Afognak in Alaska. It was established by Russian and Alutiiq settlers in the 1800s. It was covered by 1 m (3 feet) of ash when the Mount Katmai volcano erupted in 1912. It was destroyed in the Alaska Earthquake of 1964, when it was abandoned.
With help from the United States government and the Lions Club, survivors of the earthquake rebuilt the community at a new location on Kodiak Island and named the new village Port Lions in honor of the club.
Afognak Native Corporation (ANC) was organized in 1977 pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
Afognak Island is the second largest island of the Archipelago.
Afognak Island lands holdings are the key to Afognak Native Corporations' long-term success in preserving shareholders' cultural legacy and financial stability.
