The commission serves as the AU's administrative branch. It consists of 10 commissioners, who hold individual portfolios. The commission implements AU policies and coordinates the body's activities and meetings. The commission elects its chairperson to a 4-year term.

AU2002: AU Constitutive Act (2923 words)
The African Union is hereby established in accordance with the provisions of this Act.
Any African State may, at any time after the entry into force of this Act, notify the Chairman of the Commission of its intention to accede to this Act and to be admitted as a member of the Union.
The Secretary-General of the OAU and the Chairman of the Commission shall notify all signatory States of the dates of the deposit of the instruments of ratification or accession and shall upon entry into force of this Act register the same with the Secretariat of the United Nations.
