In Zimbabwe major beers include, Bohlingers and Zambezi lagers are the most popular, while Lion, Carling Black Label and Castle Pilsener round out the main varieties. Eagle lager is another popular beer which is on the scene. Wines include Mukuyu.


In Tanzania, Safari Lager and Kilimanjaro Lager are predominant. Tanzabeer is a lager-like beer local to Tanzania which has now been introduced to the United Kingdom via Mkaka & Co in West London.


In Namibia a major beer is Windhoek Lager, named for the country's capital.

Mozambique produces two of the most awarded beers in Africa, Laurentina Clara (Pilsener style) and Preta (a dark lager). Manica is also reputed to be one of Africa's finest Lagers, and 2M, produced by the same brewery (CdM), is also popular. Laurentina is now exported to South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Mauritius', Mauritius Breweries produce a local lager (Phoenix) and a strong lager (Blue Marlin). They are also licensed to brew Guinness (of the Foreign Extra Stout variety) and Warsteiner since 2003. They also brew beer destined for Madagascar (Three Horses) under licence.


Eastern Africa

Tusker, brewed by the Kenya Breweries Limited, carries the day in Kenya and is known for its wonderfully populist slogan: "Makes us equal. Has no equal". Popularly known as 'Keroro' beer is a source of Kenyan pride highlighted by the recent trade war between the Kenya and South African breweries with their competing Castle and Tusker Brands.


A massive and sometimes brutal merchandising and advertising war to capture the Kenyan market ensued in the late 1990s, resulting in the closing of the South African Breweries' plant in Thika, Kenya. The plant was subsequently bought by Kenya Breweries, who now produce South African Breweries' beers under license, and in small quantity.


A new brewery known as Top Rank Industries is also coming up with the growing popularity of its beer, Senior Lager. It is headed by Mr. Michael Kamau who acts as its director.

1.3. Historical Background:- Meta Abo Brewery S.C. (MAB) was established as a share company in 1967 by a group of shareholders. It occupies a land area size of 36.96 hectares. The business objective of Meta Abo Brewery is the production and sales of beer to customers. It was initially set up with a capital of over Birr 2 million with production capacity of 50,000 hectoliters of beer annually and with 128 employees only. The Brewery has undertaken a number of major capacity building and expansion programs since its establishment with a view to meeting the ever-growing demand for its beer.


As a result the level of its operation in terms of production and sales volume has increased almost 9 fold over the years, and yet still with a wide gap between the demand and supply of the beer. Currently its production capacity has reached to 437,000 hectoliters of beer annually with a product mix of 65% and 35% of bottled and draught beer, respectively.


Its sales distribution covers, Addis Ababa (42%) tigray, Amhara, Oromya, SNPPR Afar and Benshangul Gumuz regional states. Total sales accounts for about 30% of the total market share.


Meta Abo Brewery S.C. offers employment opportunity to over 750 persons with 20% Females.


The Brewery has been profitable over the past 10 (ten) years and envisages to boost production in the foreseeable future. Towards that end the current capacity of the brewery will grow to 750,000 hectoliters of beer annually in 2-3 years time
