Overview

Following the phenomenal success of Gundam Wing (and the end of its run), After War Gundam X premiered in early 1996. This series was the third of Bandai's alternate universes, and the last Gundam series to air for several years. This series is, in a way, a "what if" on the Universal Century's One-Year War. What if the colonists had dropped dozens of colonies instead of one, and destroyed Earth's surface? What if most of the world's population died, leaving the survivors in a ruined Mad Max-like world? New Mobile Report Gundam W (also known as Mobile Suit Gundam Wing) is a televised Anime series, which ran for 49 episodes beginning in 1995. ... In the Gundam anime series, the One-Year War is the first major war of the Universal Century (UC) and is setting of many stories in the series. ... Mad Max is an Australian apocalyptic science fiction film starring Mel Gibson which was first released in Australia in 1979, and internationally in 1980. ...

That basic premise is the setting of Gundam X, which uses the After War (AW) calendar. The series begins in AW 0015, as the Earth is just beginning to recover. The star of this series is fifteen year old Garrod Ran, a member of a "Vulture" (a scavenger group that patrols the wasteland for profits) which is on a mission to find and save mistreated Newtypes in the world from those who wish to take advantage of them. Ironically, given the post-apocalyptic setting, Gundam X has a considerably more upbeat cast of heroes than most Gundam series, and one of the higher survival rates as well. Nonetheless, Gundam X's story eventually engrosses itself into the typical Gundam war theme by featuring a new space war between the New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army. The After War is the timeline that the anime Gundam X and its sequel take place in. ... A Newtype is the next stage of human evolution in the Gundam universe. ... Apocalyptic science fiction is a sub-genre of science fiction that is concerned with the end of the world or civilization, through nuclear war, plague, or some other general disaster. ...

The series was canceled after only 39 episodes, ten episodes shorter than the previous two Gundam series. This was due to the pulling of support from the sponsors due to the slumping TV ratings and merchandise sales in Japan. The series started off strongly with a viewership rating of 6.2% TV tuned in for the Kanto area of Japan. From that point on until Episode 26, the ratings only exceeded a 4.3% rating twice, whereas 4.3% was the average rating for the previous series, Gundam Wing. After a few sponsors pulled their support, the series was moved to an abysmal 6 AM Saturday morning slot, where the ratings declined to unprecendented levels for a Gundam series, with 0.6% viewers tuned in for the final episode.

There are several explanations for Gundam X's unpopularity. These include speculation that its attempt to merge Universal Century concepts with the flashier elements of previous alternate universes alienated rather than unified the two sets of fans, or that Japan was, with a new Gundam series and/or movie released every year, simply experiencing "Gundam fatigue". A relatively slow-moving storyline may also have had something to do with it. However, no clear answer has been established and it must be noted that the series did not actually become "unpopular" until the timeslot change: which-for all intents and purposes-effectively "killed" the Series. After this, TV Asahi has yet to air another Gundam Series.

One of the more memorable parts of this series, however, is that it gives an answer to the everlasting Newtype question. It is also well-known for the relatively trouble-free and lasting romance that eventually blooms between Garrod Ran and Tiffa Adill. A Newtype is the next stage of human evolution in the Gundam universe. ...

Ironically, the side story manga Gundam X: Under the Moonlight, released as a tie-in with the DVD release of Gundam X, proved unexpectedly popular and was extended from its initial run of six chapters. A side story in fiction is a form of narrative that occurs alongside established stories set within a fictional universe. ... 2nd English edition of InuYasha Vol. ...

This series presented a scenario similar to the Universal Century's One-Year War and showed what would have happened had the colonists dropped dozens of colonies instead of one and destroyed the Earth's surface, destroying most of the Earth's population and leaving the survivors in a ruined post-apocalyptic world.
Gundam X also used the space war concept featured in previous Gundam series as a backdrop, with the New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army as the opposing factions.
The side story manga Gundam X: Under the Moonlight, released as a tie-in with the DVD release of Gundam X, proved popular and was extended from its initial run of six chapters.
