Zonneveld and Duncan 2003 classified agapanthus into six species: A. campanulatus, A. caulescens, A. coddii, A. praecox, A. inapertus and A. africans. Four taxa recognised by Leighton (1965) as species (A. comptonii, A. walshii, A. dyeri and A. nutans) are given status below species rank.
