Encyclopedia > Agarwal

Agarwal, variously spelt as Aggarwal, Agrawal or Agarwala is a common surname or the last name amongst one of the important trading communities in India. In around 3000 B.C., Agrasen was the ruler of Agroha, which existed near what is now the city of Hissar in Haryana, India. Agroha comprised 18 Gotras, or provinces, which it is believed were named after his 18 sons. Eventually, after several invasions of Agroha and the surrounding regions by foreign conquerors, the descendants of the Gotras were forced to migrate to other parts of India. The names associated with these original Gotras (and variations thereof) are the surnames of the Agarwal community today: Garg, Mangal, Kucchal, Goyan, Goyal, Bansal, Kansal, Singhal, Jindal, Thingal, Airan, Dharan, Madhukul, Bindal, Mittal, Tayal, Bhandal, and Naagal. All eighteen of these names are synonymous with the Agarwal surname. Agrawals are the largest and most infuential of the merchant communities in India. ...
